Body Contouring After Massive Weight Loss

Whether by traditional means of diet and exercise, or through bariatric (gastric bypass) surgery, morbidly obese individuals have been able to achieve successful and sustained massive weight loss. After massive weight loss, many patients find that they are left with unwanted excess, sagging skin and residual areas of fat. Areas affected include the abdomen, breasts, arms, thighs, face and neck. The deformities that result following massive weight loss vary greatly. Factors such as amount of weight loss, fat distribution patterns, body type and skin elasticity all play a role in the deformities following massive weight loss.

Lower Body Lift and Extended Abdominoplasty:

Massive weight loss often results in a heavy fold of skin and fat at the lower abdomen, and sagging at the buttocks and thighs. The body lift procedure, also known as a torsoplasty or lower body lift, removes this heavy fold of skin, and tightens the outer thigh and buttocks.

Augment Mastopexy:

Women often find that after weight loss, their breasts lose volume and appear saggy. A breast augmentation and lift, also called an augmentation and mastopexy, can restore volume and lift and shape the breasts.

Men can experience breast enlargement with obesity. After weight loss, the breast area may remain enlarged and saggy. Gynecomastia surgery will reduce the enlargement and give an improved profile.

Neck Lift:

Excess skin and fat at the neck can result following massive weight loss. A neck lift can tighten the skin in this area resulting in an improved neck contour.

The result obtained from body contouring procedures depends on the amount and distribution of excess tissues, elasticity of the skin and body type. It is important to have realistic expectations for your surgery. The recovery time and limitations during your recovery vary with each type of procedure.
